A historical moment for Cretan Extra Virgin Olive Oil!
After a persistent and coordinated campaign lasting at least seven years, with the final four years marked by systematic effort and intensive collaboration among all stakeholders, the European Union has approved the registration of “PGI Kriti” olive oil in the registry of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI). This decision officially recognizes and institutionally protects the uniqueness, exceptional quality, and internationally renowned reputation of Cretan Extra Virgin Olive Oil. According to the application specifications, the product will be produced and processed exclusively in the Region of Crete. This certification ensures that “PGI Kriti” olive oil will permanently bear the authentic seal of its place of origin, its people, traditions, and quality.
The Exporters’ Assoviation of Crete played a substantial and decisive role in managing the application, particularly during the crucial final two years. Through the active leadership of President Alkis Kalambokis and Vice President Emmanouil Karpadakis, working in close cooperation with the Region of Crete—which initiated this important effort—and with support from relevant cooperatives, organizations, laboratories, and private companies, this major achievement became possible.
We express our warm gratitude to the Regional Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis; former Deputy Regional Governor and current MP Manolis Chnaris; President of the Agri-Food Partnership and former Deputy Regional Governor Irini Choudetanaki; and Deputy Regional Governor and former President of the Agri-Food Partnership Stavros Tzedakis, for their excellent cooperation and effective coordination in completing the application. We also thank all those who contributed with consistency and dedication to the recognition of PGI Crete/PGI Kriti olive oil.
Moving forward, it is our collective responsibility to strictly observe and defend the established specifications to protect the product’s identity and further strengthen its commercial success.
The designation of “PGI Crete/PGI Kriti” olive oil represents more than just formal European recognition—it marks the beginning of a new, dynamic era for premium, quality, and authentic Cretan Extra Virgin Olive Oil, which serves as an ambassador of Cretan land and the Mediterranean diet worldwide.
